Seal oil cures joint pain

Researchers in Bergen have discovered a new miracle-cure against joint pain – seal oil. In ten years this could be the most important treatment against arthritis pains.

The results are eye-opening after only five years of clinical tests with seal oil in Bergen. Patients with inflamed intestines and hurting joints will get rid of the pain in shorter or longer periods.

 

Researchers at Haukeland university-hospital and NIFES (National institute for nutrition and seafood research) are the first in the world to have researched seal oil and joint pains. The work can have positive results for patients in the future.

 

Unmistakable results

- In ten years seal oil could be the best start for this group of patients, and the most important form of treatment against joint pains, says professor Arnold Berstad at Haukeland university-hospital.

 

- Is this a new miracle-cure?

 

- It seem like it is. The patients have not experienced anything like this before. The pain has disappeared, and they find seal oil to be a miracle-cure, answers Berstad.

 

Since 1998 researchers in Bergen have done clinical experiments with seal oil. Both refined and unrefined oil was used, and the results are unmistakable: The patients were no longer in pain. For some people, the effects may last a couple of weeks, for others for months.

 

- The seal’s fat does not stiffen when exposed to the cold, explains Berstad to BT.

 

- When people with rheumatoid arthritis eat fatty-acids, their joins will become softer, and will not stiffen when exposed to the cold. Just like the seal.

 

Omega -3

It is still a mystery why seal oil prevents joint pains. The researchers think the answer lays in the omega -3 fatty-acids, found in the seal oil.

 

- But this is not a proven fact yet, reports Berstad to BT.

 

- The explanation could lie in the different molecule-structures in both the fish and seal. Maybe we will find some of the answers now, proclaims Dr. Philos. Livar Frøyland at NIFES.

 

This week the work to compare cod-liver oil to seal oil begins. In the new experiments at Haukeland, patients with certain types of arthritis will also take part here.
