The Heart beats for Omega-3

With the help of changed diet and/or the intake of omega-3 fatty acids, one with high cholesterol and triglyceride can prevent heart and vessel diseases both long and short term.

This is proven by a new doctor treatment by Elsa Maud Hjerkinn at the University in Oslo (UiO). It was registered a reduction of 50% of death risk after only 3 years with test patients who took omega-3 fatty acids, according to the department. You think that a healthy life is daily work out and a strict diet. However, according to Social and health directorate the key to food and exercise is not so demanding.

More flexible veins

But already now some people feel to include and extra fish meal in the week- instead of hot dog or pizza? –The groups that received omega-3 fatty acids had more flexible veins and were less irritated by endotelcells. We observed also a decrease of 50% with the death risk only after three years with those who included omega-3 in their diet.

This Elsa Maud Hjerkinn says to Tidsskrift for the Norwegian Doctors.

Two researches’ are the base for Hjerkinns doctor degree: The Oslo research and the DOIT study. This includes that researchers have studied the health development with 10 people over a long period of time within their department. A couple of patients in the last mentioned study received simple health advice; others got omega-3 supplements, and the third group got both. Also, one group took only placebo pills.

The simple advice that was given in the Oslo study was:

·         more fish

·         less fat from the animal kingdom

·         more fat/oils from the plants

- Doctors should be more deliberate

In the conclusion of UiO’s web page it points out that few diet studies have shown direct effect on arteriosclerosis.

At the end it says:

“Doctors that treat patients with high cholesterole ( and high triglycerides) should be more aware on the long term health prices that can be achieved through diet advice and marine fatty acids (omega-3 fatty acids)”.
